YERBA GONNA FEEL A KICK
December 1, 2005 — IT looks like stale oregano and tastes like stewed grass, but yerba mate (pronounced 'MA-tay') is sweeping New York. Brewed into a tea, the drink produces a coffee-like buzz - but without, fans claim, the headaches or jittery side effects. And like green tea, it's loaded with antioxidants. But the real reason yerba mate's become such a hit - Madonna and Hillary Clinton reportedly can't drink it fast enough - is because of its slimming properties. Devotees claim it helps them lose weight.

New York nutritionist Lauren Davidson says it worked for her. "When I started drinking it four or five years ago, I lost five pounds in the first month and I've never regained that weight. I swear by mate - I can't imagine starting the day without it." Davidson now recommends the herbal infusion to all her clients.
