March Internet Special - Save on 1lb Bags of Wild Harvest!

Last month, we introduced our new Eco Pouch [ ==> ], logo, and website overhaul. We appreciate all the compliments! While we're not quite ready to make the next exciting announcement (which is a new product announcement), we have spent some time in the library researching and updating our Yerba Mate White Paper, as well as portions of our website. It seems like the pace of new and exciting discoveries surrounding yerba mate has really accelerated over the past year or two.

We've also published on our website a polyphenol comparison between Green Tea, Black Tea, and Yerba Mate. This can be viewed on our Health Benefits page. Be sure to checkout two recent studies we've highlighted below.

We haven't had a monthly special involving our loose product in a while, so here we go...

Chlorogenic acid protects paraoxonase 1 activity in high density lipoprotein from inactivation caused by physiological concentrations of hypochlorite
We hypothesized that chlorogenic acids, the main phenolics in coffee, many fruits and Ilex paraguariensis extracts, protect paraoxonase 1 activity in HDL from inactivation by chlorination at concentrations of HOCl (50 microM) and chlorogenic acid (2-10 microM) compatible with those found in humans. When human HDL was incubated in the presence of HOCl/OCl-, a concentration dependent loss of activity was apparent. Of interest, 5 caffeoylquinic acid at 5 micromol/L affords more than 60% protection of the activity reaching 100% at 25 micromol/L. This compound and the plant sources that are rich in them may be protectors of paraoxonase 1 activity.

Brazilian Natural Medicines. III. Structures of Triterpene Oligoglycosides and Lipase Inhibitors from Mate, Leaves of Ilex paraguariensis.
Background about pancreatic lipase... The prevalence of obesity is increasing at an alarming rate, but, unfortunately, only a few medications are currently on the market. Obesity is primarily regarded as a disorder of lipid metabolism and the enzymes involved in this process could be selectively targeted to develop antiobesity drugs. Recently, newer approaches for the treatment of obesity have involved inhibition of dietary triglyceride absorption via inhibition of pancreatic lipase (PL) as this is the major source of excess calories.

Study: The methanolic extract from the leaves of Ilex paraguariensis (Aquifoliaceae) was found to show an inhibitory activity on porcine pancreatic lipase. From the methanolic extract, three new triterpene oligoglycosides, mateglycosides A, B, and C, were isolated together with 18 known compounds. The chemical structures of new oligoglycosides were elucidated on the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence. Several constituents showed inhibitory activities on pancreatic lipase.
